Make your own sausage crumbles and save money

I saw these Jimmy Dean Hearty Sausage Crumbles in my local grocery store and they looked perfect to put in my morning sausage, spinach, and cheese omelet. But I could make myself pay $3.99 for 9.6 ounces of sausage. If my math is right this would be a whopping $6.65 per pound for these precooked sausage bits.

Still wanting the convenience of these sausage crumbles I picked up a 3 pound tube of uncooked sausage at Costco for $6.94 and proceeded to brown the meat in my iron skillet. I kept the sausage unseasoned but would be a great time to add your favorites spices (garlic, black pepper, onion powder, cayenne pepper, jalapeno powder, etc.)

Once the meat was well browned I let it cool to room temperature and stored in 4-5 ounce portions and vacuum sealed for storage in the freezer. You could also use small freezer bags and just squeeze out as much air as you can.

Now I pull out a bag every few days as needed and speed up the preparation of my sausage omelets by at least a few minutes and in addition by browning the meat myself I can get the same quantity as the store brand but at a price of $1.38 per package or at 34% of the Jimmy Dean Hearty Sausage Crumbles.
